What we treat today

A broken or knocked-out tooth

For a broken or knocked-out tooth, we protect what's left, put back what can be put back, and plan the repair.

Call us on the way, and keep the tooth or any piece of it. A knocked-out tooth has a far better chance when it goes back in quickly. If you also hit your head, or your jaw feels broken, go to an emergency room first.

What happens

Usually one visit today. A finished repair, such as a crown, can need one or two more.

  1. 01

Step 1: You call and say you're on the way

We ask what happened, and tell you how to carry the tooth or the piece.

  2. 02

Step 2: The dentist checks the tooth and the ones beside it

An exam and an X-ray if it will change what we do.

  3. 03

Step 3: You get the estimate

In writing. If there are two ways forward, we show you both.

  4. 04

Step 4: We repair or protect the tooth

We smooth, bond or cover a broken tooth. When a knocked-out tooth can be put back, we put it back and hold it in place.

Comfort, waiting and after-care

  • Comfort

We numb the area first. If the tooth is very sensitive, tell us and we'll work in small steps. Raise your hand and we stop.

  • If you wait

A broken tooth can crack further, and the nerve inside can be hurt. A knocked-out tooth that stays out of the mouth has a much smaller chance of being saved. The sooner you call, the more choices you have.

  • Risks and after-care

A tooth that has been knocked out can still need a root canal later, even when it's put back, and the dentist tells you what to watch for. A repair built up with filling material can chip again. Eat soft food on that side for a few days.

  • How it's billed

You pay at the visit, after a written estimate. The estimate covers today's care. A crown or other finished repair gets its own estimate, from us or from your regular dentist.

Questions about a broken or knocked-out tooth

What do I do with the tooth?

Hold it by the crown, not the root. Rinse it gently in milk or water if it's dirty, and put it back in the socket if you can. If you can't, keep it in a cup of milk.

Can a knocked-out tooth be saved?

Sometimes. It depends on how long it was out and how it was kept. We can't tell you until the dentist looks.

Do you make crowns?

We cover a broken tooth today and plan the finished repair with you. Many patients have the crown made by their regular dentist.
