What we treat today
Lost fillings and crowns
When a filling or crown comes out, we cover the tooth again so it's protected until it's fully repaired.
Keep the crown if you have it, and bring it with you. The tooth under it can be tender to cold and air, and it can break more easily. If the tooth hurts badly, say so when you call.

What happens
Usually one visit. A new crown, if you need one, takes more than one visit.
- 01
Step 1: You call, and bring the crown
Keep it in a clean container. Don't use household glue on it.
- 02
Step 2: The dentist checks the tooth
She looks for decay or a crack under the old filling or crown. An X-ray only if it will change what we do.
- 03
Step 3: You get the estimate
In writing, before anything is cemented or filled.
- 04
Step 4: We cover the tooth again
We re-cement the crown if it fits, or replace the filling. If the tooth needs more, we tell you what and who should do it.
Comfort, waiting and after-care
Comfort
Many of these visits need little or no numbing. If the tooth is tender, we numb it. Raise your hand and we stop.
If you wait
An uncovered tooth can crack or decay faster, and it can hurt with hot, cold and air. A crown that has been out for weeks may no longer fit.
Risks and after-care
A re-cemented crown can come off again if the tooth underneath has changed. The dentist tells you if that's likely. Avoid sticky food on that side for a few days.
How it's billed
You pay at the visit, after a written estimate. Your receipt is itemized so a plan that reimburses out-of-network care can pay you back. A new crown gets its own estimate.
How fees work
Questions about lost fillings and crowns
Can you put my old crown back?
If it fits and the tooth under it is sound, yes. The dentist checks both before she cements it.
Can I glue it back myself?
Please don't use household glue. A dental cement from the drugstore can hold a crown for a short time until your visit.
Do you make new crowns?
We cover the tooth today. A new crown is planned over more than one visit, and many patients have it made by their regular dentist.
